Donald Trump said President Obama has done “nothing” for African Americans — and predicted the country would not see another black President any time soon because of his missteps.

The GOP contender ripped into Obama Sunday in an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” saying he’ll likely be the last black President for generations “because I think that he has set a very poor standard. I think that he has set a very low bar and I think it's a shame for the African-American people.”

The bombastic billionaire cited black unemployment as evidence of Obama’s neglect.

“He has done nothing for African Americans. You look at what's gone on with their income levels. You look at what's gone on with their youth. I thought that he would be a great cheerleader for this country. I thought he'd do a fabulous job for the African-American citizens of this country,” Trump said. “He has done nothing. They are worse now than just about ever.”

Is Trump Right? A Look at What Obama's Done for Black Community



This weekend, ever-opinionated billionaire candidate for president Donald Trump lowed the boom on President Obama on the often discussed issue of what the first black President has done for African Americans.

"He has done nothing for African Americans. You look at what's gone on with their income levels. You look at what's gone on with their youth. I thought that he would be a great cheerleader for this country. I thought he'd do a fabulous job for the African-American citizens of this country. He has done nothing," Trump said.

"They have problems now in terms of unemployment numbers, look at their unemployment numbers. And you have— here you have a black president who's done very poorly for the African Americans of this country," Trump added.

But is Trump correct? It depends on whether you can blame the President for every single role the federal government may or may not have in the specific lives of all Americans. It's also hard to deny the role of discrimination in hiring and opportunity in America -- a point that was made by Hillary Clinton at the National Urban League Conference last week.

Let's take a statistical look at seven major issues that have always been important in the African American community and what the numbers were as President George W. Bush left office and what they are now.

Unemployment -- According to the Department of Labor, when President Obama took office in January 2008, the Black unemployment rate was 12.7 percent. The best Black unemployment number during the Obama Administration so far was in June 2015 at 9.5 percent. The best Black unemployment rate during George Bush's presidency was 7.7 percent in August 2007. The worst number under Bush was 12.1 in December 2008. The worst Black unemployment under Obama was 16.8 in March 2011 -- a 28 year high -- according to the Department of Labor.

But the landscape is a bit more complicated than the numbers. In 2011, evidence of a so-called "Black Manession" emerged. In September 2014, reports on the Black female unemployment rate showed at 10.6 percent, the same as it was the year before. Many assert that hiring discrimination and the fact that many have left the job market all together are factors for high Black unemployment overall.

Poverty -- The poverty rate for African Americans has become worse over the past few years. It was 25 percent when President Bush left office. It rose to 28 percent in 2013 -- the most recent stat available. One out of three black children, 38 percent of all African American children, lived in poverty in 2013, as reported by PEW on July 14. Overall, there are more people living in poverty in the U.S. than at other time in U.S. history at 45 million people.

Education -- There has been major progress underPresident Obama in education with regard to high school dropout rates. According to the Department of Education, High School dropout rates are at a historic low, with the greatest progress seen among African Americans and Hispanics. Overall the national high school graduation rate hit an all time high in 2013 of 81.4 percent.

Between 2010-11 and 2012-13, graduation rates for Hispanic students increased by over four percentage points from 71 percent to 75.2 percent, and Black students increased by nearly four percentage points from 67 percent to 70.7 percent. U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences, National Center for Education Statistics.

Health Care -- President Obama's victories in Congress for comprehensive health care coverage as well as his recent win in the Supreme Court, means that many African Americans will benefit. By March 2015, over 16 million Americans had enrolled in Obamacare. Because of Obamacare, the rates of uninsured Americans have fallen to 11.9 percent after being at 16 percent when President Bush left office.

Over 3 million poor Americans, including hundreds of thousands of African Americans in the South would be covered if not for Republican governors blocking the Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act. In 2014, many health care advocates worked to get around the the attempts to block coverage.

Justice -- President Obama signed the Fair Sentencing Act in 2010 which narrowed the penalty between crack and powder cocaine from 1:100 to 1:18. Last year, President Obama established a task force on policing and this year he rolled back the use of certain military equipment by local police -- a Black Lives Matter related demand.

During the Obama presidency, the Department of Justice has investigated several police departments including Ferguson, Cleveland and Philadelphia under former Attorney General Eric Holder and current Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

Income Inequality -- Income inequality between black and white is at its widest point in 25 years. According to a study by PEW in 2014, the average white household is worth $141,900, while the average black one is worth $11,000.

The foreclosure crisis that hit hardest in 2007 and 2008 disproportionately hurt black homeowners because they were targeted by banks for subprime loans. (In 2008, the cities of Cleveland and Baltimore sued Wells Fargo over those practices.)

Focus on Black Males -- In February 2014, President Obama introduced My Brother's Keeper, to specifically focus on improving the lives of young African American males. The initiative is encouraging nonprofits to raise $200 million in five years for programs focused on young men of color. Though My Brother's Keeper is not a federally funded government program, no such effort has existed before under any American President. President Obama is said to be planning to make My Brother's Keeper a major part of leaves office.

Trump's critique of President Obama comes at a point when the President is entering the fourth quarter of his presidency. In recent months he has spoken bluntly on racism and the lack of opportunity in America and he has announced programs and initiatives geared toward minority communities. With 16 months left, President Obama appears to be well aware that he needs to push more on African American issues.

Poll Shows Black People Have Begun to Recover Their Senses on Race Relations
Finally, Black perceptions of the actual racial situation in the United States are catching up with reality, after years of collective delusion under The First Black President. “Black perceptions on race have swung 20 percent – from 48 to 68 percent negative – in the year since the emergence of an incipient movement against police violence.” Black pessimism about race relations is up 38% since the “’we HAVE overcome’ days of delusion, in 2009.”

More Black Americans think race relations are generally bad than at any time since the Rodney King rebellion in Los Angeles, a generation ago. Whites feel pretty much the same way, according to a recent New York Times/CBS News poll.

Sixty-eight percent of Black people today believe race relations are bad, substantially more than the 59 percent negative recorded when Barack Obama was presenting himself as a candidate for president, back in 2008. The great dip in the statistics (or peak, depending on one’s perspective), was registered in 2009, the year of Black euphoria that began with Obama’s inauguration. By April of 2009, only 30 percent of Blacks told pollsters they saw race relations in a generally bad light. Half of Blacks’ negative perceptions on race disappeared the moment a Black family set up residence in the White House.

I don’t pretend to understand what white Americans generally mean by “bad” or “good” race relations – except that it is certainly very different than what Black Americans mean, when using the same terminology. I suspect that most whites think relations are “good” when they don’t have to hear Black people complaining too loudly. The perceptions of the people at the receiving end of racial oppression are usually more reflective of racial realities than the impressions of members of the dominant/oppressor group, who in all cultures minimize the degree of harm inflicted by their group. However, the oppressed are also quite subjective in their analyses of conditions. They hope against hope, or are overcome by despair – emotional swings directly related to their perception of the forces allied with, or against, them.

The polls show two recent periods of great volatility in Black perceptions of the general racial climate: the soaring euphoria of 2009, whose effects continued through 2010; and the dramatic year-long rise in Black discontent (translated in polls as pessimism on race relations) that began in August, 2014, when Ferguson, Missouri, rebelled against the police killing of Michael Brown. In between, we see a slow but steady erosion of Black perceptions of “good” race relations beginning in 2012, the year Trayvon Martin was gunned down in Florida, when Blacks’ negative ratings on race climbed above the 40 percent level for the first time since Obama took office.

Race relations, as measured by Black perceptions, are now 9 percent “worse” than they were in 2008, before Obama’s election. The objective reality, of course, is that the Black economy collapsed during the financial meltdown that reached its peak in 2009 – the very year when Blacks perceived race relations as “least” bad, at 30 percent. So deep was the “Obama delirium” in 2009, that 39 percent of Blacks told pollsters for the Pew Research Center that African Americans were better off than five years before – even though Black unemployment was hovering around 16 percent, nearly twice the level of 2004, and Black wealth had fallen to one-twentieth of whites, as evidenced by wholesale home foreclosures in Black neighborhoods. Black people’s collective (subjective) perception at the dawn of the Age of Obama, according to the Pew poll, was that “the state of black progress in America [has] improved more dramatically than at any time in the last quarter century.” Every indicator of Black economic well being crashed in 2009, yet Black folks believed the opposite.

The steady rise in “bad” feelings about the racial situation – which is inextricable from the Black economic condition – is, therefore, a good thing. Gross misperceptions, wildly misplaced optimism, and the outright delirium experienced by so many Blacks at the start of the Obama presidency, greatly weaken and disarm a people. “Good feelings” in “bad” and “dangerous” times serve only to accelerate the processes of disaster. We need more “bad” feelings about racial oppression, mass Black incarceration, late-stage capitalism, mad-dog imperialism, and the survival of the biosphere.

No More Empty Celebrations and False Optimism

The Black Misleadership Class, which for two generations has pursued its own narrow interests with no regard for the masses of Black folks, thrives on the illusion of progress, which gives the false impression that their leadership has born fruit. This perfidious class celebrated not only Obama, but also the brief and delirious “era of good feeling” that accompanied his rise, offering no resistance whatsoever to The First Black President’s corporate neoliberalism and hyper-aggressive imperial policies. “Good” feelings led to disastrous results.

The most encouraging development since the emergence of an incipient, grassroots movement against police violence – an occurrence that is inseparable from the increase in “bad” feelings about race in the U.S. – is the growing rejection by young people of a Black Misleadership Class that strives for better “race relations” (peace) rather than a thorough transformation of U.S. society (justice). These are the kinds of Negroes that study the polls, wishing most of all for an increase in whites who sympathize with Blacks (whatever that subjectively means), rather than hoping that huge numbers of Black people get mad enough to make a MOVEMENT.

If an oppressed people don’t believe they are oppressed, they will not do much of anything to change their condition. In the words attributed to Harriet Tubman: “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.”

Although the field of hopefuls for the Republican Party presidential nomination is large, Donald Trump has emerged as the GOP‘s front-runner somehow. Trump made the television rounds on Sunday’s political talk shows, blasting the #BlackLivesMatter movement and saying that President Barack Obama has essentially failed Black people.

Trump was a guest on ABC News’ This Week with host Jonathan Karl and ran through his usual campaign spiel but what stood out is when Karl took Trump to task over his comments regarding President Obama. In a tweet last year, Trump said that Obama did such a poor job in the post that America won’t see another president for generations. Naturally, Trump tried to clean that statement up in his usual fashion.

KARL: I understand your critique. But why do you say that means we won’t see another black president for generations?

TRUMP: Because I think that he has set a very poor standard. I think that he has set a very low bar and I think it’s a shame for the African American people.

Trump continued with his pointed statements on NBC News’ Meet The Press, this time mishandling a question regarding the #BlackLivesMatter movement and essentially supporting the very notion the campaign was sparked to address regarding police and their treatment of Black people.

DONALD TRUMP: Well, I can certainly see it when I see what’s going on. But at the same time, we have to give power back to the police because we have to have law and order. Hundreds of killings are in Baltimore. Hundreds of killings are in Chicago. And New York is not doing so great in terms of that front. And so many other cities.

We have to give strength and power back to the police. And you’re always going to have mistakes made. And you’re always going to have bad apples. But you can’t let that stop the fact that police have to regain some control of this tremendous crime wave and killing wave that’s happening in this country.

America, do you really want this guy to be calling the shots in the White House? Asking for a friend.

Here we go yet again.

Police needlessly kill unarmed black man, peaceful protests follow, then that peace turns to violence, and the media descends en masse to capture images of angry, vengeful young black youths looting stores and setting cars ablaze.

The subliminal message?

They’re all as bad as each other.

Only they’re not.

The cops involved in this seemingly endless recent wave of young black men being killed in dubious/unacceptable circumstances are a disgrace.

Barack Obama was elected President on a tidal wave of hope, optimism and genuine belief from tens of millions of African-Americans that he would finally get them true justice and equality.

What’s the point being the first black president if you CAN’T do that?

But he’s failed.

Many black Americans feel even more marginalized than they did before he came to power. They feel even less ‘equal’, even more exposed to injustice. Most are just as poor and badly educated as they were before Obama got to the White House.

And who, honestly, can blame them for thinking their President has failed them in light of so many dreadful deaths of unarmed blacks at the hands of a system that is supposed to protect them?

Particularly when the vast majority of those deaths are cynically covered up, black lives diminished to misreported statistics on a police form.

Obama, as he does with so many important issues – like guns for example – talk a great game on racial injustice but delivers very little.

He makes emotional speeches, puts his arm around families of victims, and promises, promises, promises, that things will improve.

But they don’t.

America is a racial tinderbox right now. Just as it has been throughout its history in varying degrees.

Things aren’t as bad as they were in the ‘60s, but it’s still a very dangerous situation.

With every new unarmed black man that U.S. cops kill, and with every one of the culprits who evades justice, the collective fury of the black community grows.

I’m incensed by it, and I’m white. So God knows what African-Americans must be feeling.

The President needs to do more than just utter yet more platitudes from the Oval Office.

He should be down in Baltimore today, talking directly to the people who feel he has betrayed them.

HIS people, with HIS skin colour, who voted for HIM because they thought HE would change the system.

Less talk, more action, Mr President.

Or you will go down in history as the guy who did less for blacks in America than Lyndon Johnson – a white man.
